Jamaica, 1675. After a long career in piracy, Captain Henry Morgan was appointed Governor of Jamaica, with explicit orders to rid the Caribbean of pirates and buccaneers! Instead, he invited all his former "colleagues" to join him in his retirement, to enjoy the fruits of their plunder with impunity. Every year, in remembrance of the "good old days", Morgan organizes the Grand Défi, a race around the island, and at the end of it, the captain with the most gold is declared the Grand Winner.

A pirate racing game

This is a pirate-themed tactical racing game, with player interaction and secondary goals (e.g. making a detour for treasure). The winner is the player who best balances his position in the race with his success in the secondary goals.

The game ends on the turn when at least one player's ship reaches the finish line, completing a circuit around the island of Jamaica. At this point, players receive different amounts of gold depending on how far they are from the finish line at the end of the race. This gold is added to the gold that a player has picked up along the way by making detours to look for precious treasure, stealing gold or treasure from other players, or simply loading it according to the maps that the player has used during the race. The player with the most total gold acquired by all these means is then declared the winner.

A game of opportunism

Each player always has a hand of three cards, and a personal tableau representing the five holds of his ship, into which goods can be loaded during the game. In each round, one player is designated as the "captain". The captain rolls two dice, examines his cards, and then announces which die corresponds to "day" and which die corresponds to "night". Each player then simultaneously selects one card from their hand and places it face down in front of them. Each card has two symbols, one on the left - corresponding to "day" - and one on the right - corresponding to "night". The symbols indicate either the movement of the ship (forwards or backwards) or the loading of a type of cargo.

After each player has chosen a card, all cards are revealed simultaneously and then resolved one by one in a clockwise direction, starting with the captain's card. When it is a player's turn to solve his card, the player will load a number of goods or move his ship a number of spaces equal to the value of the corresponding die, for the left symbol on his card first, then for the right symbol. Thus, the main decision each player makes during the game is which of the three cards in his hand will serve him best in a particular turn, taking into account the day and night dice values.

Finally, during the race, when a player lands on a space already occupied by another player, there is a battle. Battles are resolved by rolling a "combat" die, but players can improve their chances by using "gunpowder" tokens from their chocks, if they have loaded them in previous turns. The winner of a battle can steal goods or treasure from the loser.
